- Africans in America. - This is a site operated by PBS and contains many links to primary sources covering the experience of African Americans throughout the 19th century.
- America's Story From America's Library: Meet Amazing Americans - This site has links to famous writers, inventors, activists and politicians from throughout American history.
- American Journeys - Eyewitness accounts from every voyage of discovery before 1840. Made by the Wisconsin Historical Society from its collections of rare books and manuscripts.
- American Memory Historical Collection - This site is the gateway to rich primary sources relating to the history and culture of the United States. Over 7 million digital items from 100 collections are located here.
- Best of History Web Sites - A web portal created for history teachers, students and general history enthusiasts, containing annotated links to over 1000 history sites.
- Digital History - This site has many high quality historical sources, including special sections with links to ethnic, enslaved, Mexican and Native voices, the Civil War, Primary Sources and biographies.
- Eye Wittness to History.com - This site contains links to the 19th Century, the Civil War and the Old West. You can also type in searches of the people you are researching and it will take you to other links on them. Not all people on the topic list are represented. However, the site provides interesting, readable secondary sources on many people and topics.
- History Matters - You can search this site for your specific people but it also ontains an annotated guide to other useful websites about history.
- Museum of Afro American History Boston - This is a links page with excellent resources for historical and cultural topics related to African Americans.
- Open Directory Project - The many connections on this site lead to a wide variety of sources for information of authors and their works.
- PBS Home Page - This site is operated by PBS. You can type in a search on any name and it will bring up brief biographies, articles in which this person is referenced or even programs PBS has done on this individual. Most of these sections have sites you can link to that delve deeper into the subject.
- Turning Points in Wisconsin History - 1,000 documents linking Wisconsin events to national themes.
- Women in American History - Sponsored by Encyclopedia Britannica, this site uses a timeline format to demonstrate the impact of women on all aspects of American history. If you go to the 'In Their Words,' section, you'll find some quality primary sources.
- Words of Thunder - This site is about the abolition movement in Boston. It highlights the work of William Lloyd Garrison and his paper The Liberator.
- Yahoo Directory U.S. History > 19th - This directory has many links, both on time periods and people. You can also do your own search within the directory if your person isn't listed specifically.
- the avalon project at Yale Law School - This site contains many quality primary sources on the 19th Century.
- The Gilder Lerhman Institute of American History-This archive has many primary sources from the 1800's.

- American Authors - Not a lot of authors here, but good, brief biographies of the ones who are included.
- American Authors on the Web - Here you will find many connections to quality sources about American authors. The site is grouped chronologically by decades.
- American Literature Anthology Writers' Index - This source will connect you to works and biographies of American Authors.
- American Literature Web Resources: Links - This is a collection of links to quality sites and is grouped by eras.
- American Literature on the Web - This set of American literature resource pages is mainly a collection of links to sites on the Internet especially dealing with American literature and its social, cultural contexts. By scrolling down to the section titled 'American Literature Resources in Section by Period', you will be able to access information about the social context of each author.
- Brief Timeline of American Literature and Events: Pre-1620 to 1920 - This timeline provides a short chronology of events in American history and literature. It is linked to bibliographies as well as to a set of more general linked resources: pages on American authors, literary movements, and American literature sites. Each author page contains a picture (if available), a bibliography (if available), links to major sites about the author, and links to works online.
- Key Sites on American Literature - This source is a clearinghouse for several excellent American literature sites.
- Literature @ Sunsite - This webpage, sponsored by UC-Berkeley, compiles the online texts of several authors whose works are in the public domain, so is a good source for their writings.
- Making of America - Compiled at Cornell University, this website houses hundreds of original documents that appeared in respected journals and magazines of the 19th Century. Click on 'Browse' and navigate as you would a dictionary - using guide words. Alphabetized by author and title.
- Poetry and Music of the War Between the States - Here you will find biographies of authors who wrote poetry about the Civil War as well as selections of Union and Confederate poetry and music of the Civil War.
- Wright American Fiction 1851 - 1875 - Click on the 'Browse by Author' section to gain access to a wide variety of original texts by the authors. By taking time to sift through the sources, you may find just what you need for your quotations.
